PHENOTYPIC CHARACTERIZATION OF ANIMAL GENETIC RESOURCES

Characterization of animal genetic resources for food and agriculture (AnGR) involves three types of information: phenotypic, genetic and historical. The weight given to each depends on the country (e.g. whether it is developed or developing) and the objective (e.g. improve- ment, conservation or breed differentiation). These guidelines focus on the collection and use of phenotypic information. Phenotypic characterization of AnGR is the process of identifying distinct breed popula- tions and describing their external and production characteristics in a given environment and under given management, taking into account the social and economic factors that affect them. The information provided by characterization studies is essential...

Lichens flora of Phulchoki (Kathmandu)

Study of lichens flora of Phulchoki showed that this area is rich in the lichen flora. A total of 250 different samples were collected from this area. The identification of collected specimens was done on basis of their morphological, anatomical and inimical studies. The lichens were collected from different altitudinal gradients extending from 1500-2700m. above sea level. The association of lichens with different substrata also studied. A total of 32 species of lichens were identified, which encompass 9 families and 10 genera. Among them family Parmeliaceae was largest.

Tailored media for the detection of E. coli and coliform in the water sample

The objective of the water treatment is to supply potable water that is chemically and microbiologically safe for human consumption. This purity can be achieved by a variety of processes depending upon the source and nature of the water. These processes include clarification, sedimentation, filtration and disinfections. The overall main aim of these procedures is to reduce the number of organisms present in the water and find an essential safeguard against waterborne microbial diseases.

Prevalence of extended spectrum Beta-lactamase producing Klebsiella species in an intensive care unit

The main aim of this study includes, to isolate and speciate the Klebsiella isolates from various clinical specimens from patients admitted in ICU. To determine the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of Klebsiella species by disc diffusion method. And to detect the presence of extended spectrum betalactamases (ESBL) by double disc synergy test and Inhibitor Potentiated disc diffusion test.

Production of alkaline keratinolytic protease by Bacillus sp. B13 from feather waste

Alkaline keratinolytic protease producing Bacillus species was screened out from soil sample and characterized by studying morphological, cultural and biochemical properties. It was identified by using Burgey‟s manual of determinative bacteriology, identification flow charts as Bacillus alcalophilus. The isolate was employed for the production of alkaline protease by using production medium consisting of glucose and casein as carbon and nitrogen sources at pH 8.5 (Rao and Narasu, 2007). The isolate was also checked for its protease production by using feathers as sole source of carbon and nitrogen and produced significant amount of alkaline keratinolytic protease from feathers.
